Neighbor helping neighbor kept injuries to a minimum in an early morning Omaha fire on Sunday. The cause is still under investigation, but a mother and child hurt in the blaze are expected to be okay.
Firefighters called to an apartment building at 52nd and Spaulding around 1:30 a.m. made quick work to keep the fire contained to a second-floor apartment. When crews arrived residents were already being helped.
"She had soot on her face so she was obviously in the apartment that was on fire," said Acting OFD Battalion Chief Chris Newton. "She had a child that, I believe, was in the same apartment who another resident assisted out of the apartment and that was what the initial call was.”
Those who live on the north side of the building have been displaced. The Red Cross was on hand to help.
