The data base will be "real time", meaning someone could search and within minutes have an up-to-date list of all your prescription drug purchases made in the state.
The purpose of the bill is to combat prescription drug abuse.
The bill -- LB237 -- by Omaha state Sen. Gwen Howard is personal;
her oldest daughter died two years ago from an overdose of
prescription pain medication.
The measure would use an online medical information-sharing
system, called the Nebraska Health Information Initiative, already
in use in the state.
Howard and state medical officials hope having prescription drug
information immediately available will thwart abusers who visit
multiple doctors and pharmacies to receive as many prescriptions as
The bill advanced Thursday. It now goes to a final round of consideration and would have to be signed by the governor to become law.
