The University of Nebraska regents Board of Regents is scheduled to discuss a proposal that let employees' sex-same sex partners be added to the university employee benefits plan.
The regents are scheduled to only discuss the issue at their meeting Friday. A follow-up vote could occur at the regents meeting in December.
Backers say the plan would address fairness, equity and competitiveness for employee recruitment and retention and increase the university's ability to attract talented workers to Nebraska.
University President J.B. Milliken is backing the proposal. He says every other Big Ten university provides such benefits, as do most of the university's peer colleges.
He says "treating our employees equitably is the right thing to do."
