The Nebraska Department of Labor announced Friday the preliminary unemployment rate for July was 4.2 percent, slightly higher than the June rate of 4.0 and 0.2 percentage points above July 2012.
"There continues to be a high number of new entrants in the labor force looking for work, which has outpaced the July demand for workers," says Commissioner of Labor Catherine D. Lang.
The national rate dropped two-tenths of a point last month to 7.4 percent from 7.6 percent in June.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012 annual average rankings places Lincoln as the metropolitan area with the second lowest unemployment rate (3.5 percent) and Omaha with the 11th lowest rate (4.4 percent) among 372 metro areas.
