A Northeast Nebraska man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend and her new husband and setting fire to their trailer.

An Antelope County judge sentenced 34-year-old Matthew Hinrichsen Tuesday on two counts of first-degree murder and two weapons charges.

Hinrichsen was convicted in October of killing Victoria Lee and her husband, Alex Vargas.

Lee's father, Don Lee, said, ""At this point I'm happy with the sentencing. He's at least going to serve the maximum possible. It's a shame the Nebraska death penalty is not being enforced here, and a big reason is that he went out drinking the night before somewhat."

Their bodies were found in a charred trailer in rural Antelope County, where the newlyweds were living in December 2012.

Lee's mother, Susan, said: "Victoria was a wonderful daughter and Alex was a great son-in-law. We were really looking forward to getting to spend time with them and nothing is going to bring them back."

Prosecutors say Vargas died from three gunshot wounds, and Lee died of blunt force trauma to her head.
