Victims of Hurricane Sandy have a reason to thank inmates in the state of Nebraska. On Friday, the state sent a check for $984.47 from inmates to the American Red Cross to provide relief to storm victims.
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Service says it received numerous requests from inmates to help the victims. Nearly 50 inmates donated anywhere from $1 to $105 to the cause. Inmates are paid $1.20 to $3.78 per day. About 15 percent of NDCS inmates are employed in higher paying industry jobs.
“It is sometimes not known by the public that inmates send money home for support, pay for their own amenities and now are giving to victims of this very destructive storm," said NDCS Director Robert Houston. "I am impressed by this generosity.”
