Nebraska Bill Would Require Tests For Older Drivers

A Nebraska lawmaker wants to require drivers older than age 80 to pass cognitive tests to ensure the elderly are physically and mentally capable of driving.

The Legislature's Transportation and Telecommunication's Committee will hear from advocates and opponents of Scottsbluff Sen. John Harms' bill on Tuesday.

Harms says he introduced the bill after hearing from constituents who had a hard time telling their elderly family members they weren't able to safely drive anymore.

Nebraska Highway Safety administrator Fred Zwonechek says the number of older drivers is increasing in Nebraska, while their vehicle accident rate has been decreasing.
