Friday's report comes on the heels of the Thursday report on 1st time claims for unemployment that showed claims up by 43,000 in a week.
CNBC analysts note that the jobless survey was completed the week of April 12th. The increased first time claims for unemployment came in later in the month suggesting that the softness in the labor market may not be over.
The number of people unemployed for more than six months declined by more than 200,000 but that total still sits above the 5 million mark.
