The Nebraska Board of Regents has approved an increase in the cost of living in the residence halls for all of its campuses across the state the next two years.

Living in the dorms is part of college life, especially increasingly popular on the campus of University of Nebraska at Omaha, which once was a commuter school.

"It's just a really nice way to meet people," said UNO freshman David O'Neil. "When you live at home, you tend to stay with your family and that's all well and good and it's certainly cheaper, but there's a bit more independence to it."

That luxury will cost students more. Living at UNO will cost between $5,940 and $6,840, which represents an increase between 1.9 percent and four percent, depending on which of the nine residence halls the student enters into for 12 months.

"Money is tight as it is, you don't really need money going up," said Shane Titus, also a UNO freshman. "It'd be nice if it just stayed the same."

O'Neil said he understands the need. "It's definitely worth it and I live in Scott Hall, where you're required to pay for a full meal plan and in a lot of ways that pays for itself, not having to go out to eat all the time."

The University of Nebraska at Lincoln will see a 4.5 percent increase over the next two years, taking the cost from just over $9,000 currently with a seven-day meal plan to nearly $10,000 for the same package in the 2014 school year.

"I didn't come here expecting everything to be free, you pay for the experience," said O'Neil. For him, the experience must include living in the dorms. "I've made friends here, I'm comfortable, it's like I'm living my own life now."

University of Nebraska at Kearney will increase by five percent. That means a dorm room with a full meal plan will cost students there just over $8,300.
