A special donation from the community of Cozad, Nebraska was made at the Nebraska Medical Center Friday afternoon.
The volunteer fire department came to Omaha to present 14 Radio Flyer wagons as well as a $4,000 check to the pediatric unit at NMC. The money was raised through soup suppers in the community.
The fire department said it specifically chose the Med Center and wanted to give the children something to make them smile. "We have one of our firemen who has had three transplants here and he's the one who, when we were discussing where to go with the wagons and the money, he wanted to come here, because this is home to him sometimes," said Marlene Williams with Cozad Fire and Rescue.
The patients at NMC seemed to approve of the wagons. "I want some spinners," Michael Cancer, Jr., a patient in the pediatric unit said as he got his first ride in the wagon. "Because I would like to check out my ride, yo!"
The wagons are designed to give children a fun mode of transportation in the hospital rather than a wheelchair. Each wagon is presented in honor of someone from Cozad. The wagons will be engraved with the donor's name.
