Mysterious Light Outage

It's a different kind of unsolved mystery...what is causing the lights to go out?

Drivers along 42d Street between Center and Interstate 80 have been wondering why the street lights have not been working for about a week.

It was the talk around the card table at Heartland Family Services.

"They were out last night," Charlene Lawless said. "Kind of eerie in the know. kind of weird. Not really scary, it just felt different. I'm glad that my headlights were working."

The problem?

Why are the street lights along 42nd street not working?

It's been going on for about a week.

The residential neighborhood with a main street bisecting it has been without street lights and no one knows why.

An OPPD spokesman said the utility is aware of the problem, but can't pin point where it happening.

Jesse Eichelberger lives in that stretch.

"Normally it's well lit," he said. "I would say we've never had any problems."

But Eichelberger said it's been dangerously dark along the busy street.

He said a similar problem happened awhile ago after a car hit a power pole down the street.

"I think they got it fixed because it was working so all of a sudden its not working so i'm not sure," he said.

Eichelberger said neighbors are starting to get concerned.

"I've heard from other people around here that its kind of been really dark and they've kind of been worried because obviously there's a lot of traffic," he said. "A lot of people around the neighborhood could worry about break ins and stuff like that because of the lights."

Back at the card game, the debate continues...

"I think its dangerous yeah...with the lights out," Charlene Lawless said. "Why do we have streetlights? It must be dangerous."

The women hope the problem gets fixed before someone gets hurt.

An OPPD spokesman said crews will be working to find the problem and correct it as soon as possible.
