Multiple Suspended Driver

Omaha suspended driver won't stop driving. But he can't drive behind bars.

The Cassgram reports that it was the 12th driving under suspension conviction for 57-year-old Michael L. Fowler of Omaha. He was scheduled to be off suspension this coming December but now has another 15 year suspension tacked on, but he will be eligible for an interlock ignition device next spring so he can drive to work.

Fowler’s last prior DUS conviction was in 2005 in Douglas County and he received a 20 month to 48 month prison sentence. His DUI was in 1997.

In this most recent conviction, Fowler pled guilty to the Class IV Felony as part of a plea agreement in which a Class III Felony was amended and the habitual criminal enhancer was dropped.

Cass County District Court Judge Randall Rehmeier said he is aware Fowler has given up alcohol and is “sympathetic” with Fowler’s plight of trying to get to and from work, however Fowler was “certainly aware he was under revocation” when he was stopped for a burned out taillight. The judge described it as a “dinosaur in a tar pit” situation for Fowler and wants to help him get out of the tar pit.

Fowler will serve the sentence in Cass County Jail and then can apply for the ignition interlock in six months.
