A mountain lion has been sighted near Wahoo, Nebraska.
About five thirty this morning a driver reported seeing a mountain lion feasting on a road kill deer on Highway 77 just south of Wahoo.
Sheriff’s deputy Brandon Stenger was dispatched. He admits at first he was skeptical of it being a true sighting.
"Unfortunately this time it was a mountain lion," said Deputy Stenger.
But shining his spot light into nearby trees, the deputy spotted eyes and then a mountain lion jumped from the tree and ran off.
Sheriff Stukenholtz says the deputy is a hunter so he’s confident it was a mountain lion. The sheriff says the deputy saw a second set of eyes when flashing his spotlight but can’t say if that was another big cat.
The mountain lion sighting occurred about a half mile from the Wahoo Community hospital. The sheriff says hospital staff has been notified of the sighting.
"And then also, we are within in pretty close proximity of Wahoo Neumann and Wahoo Public High. That I wanted at least Game and Parks to come out and observe the cat to see if it was any type of danger to anyone," said Deputy Stenger.
Sheriff Stukenholtz says a mountain lion was spotted a few years ago close to Wahoo. WOWT6 News also reported a mountain lion head found along the Platte River near Yutan about two years ago. So mountain lion sightings are rare but not unheard of in Saunders County.
