A neighbor has been arrested in connection with a house fire and assault of its residents Thursday morning.
Eighty-three-year-old Raymond Vasholz and his 76-year-old wife Elizabeth were rushed to Alegent Creighton University Medical Center where Raymond later died. Elizabeth is in critical but stable condition at Saint Elizabeth Burn Center in Lincoln.
It happened in a home in the Minne Lusa Neighborhood near 33rd and Martin Avenue. Police arrested 30-year-old Terrance Hale for first-degree arson, first-degree murder and burglary. A court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
Dawn Reed was afraid her son would be blamed for what happened at the Vasholz home. "Yes, because I don't know, I don't know what's going on, any mother would be scared for their child, any mother would," she said before Hale was booked.
"They took me downtown and they questioned me about Terrance and asked me about his character and things like that and what I knew about it, which I didn't know anything about it."
Dawn said Hale's character is good. She said he is a deacon in his church and sings in the choir. Dawn hoped her son was there to help. "I would say hopefully help, I don't want to think, I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and I'm going to keep giving him the benefit of the doubt until I find out specifically what happened."
