The Wisconsin mother accused of locking her children in a bedroom before they died in a fire made her first court appearance Wednesday.
Angelica Belen walked into the courtroom in tears and handcuffs with her attorney by her side. She faces three counts of child neglect leading to death.
Belen told police that she left her children: 5-year-old Nayeli Colon and her 4-year-old twin brothers-Alexix and Adrian alone while she went to work.
Michael Lonski, a Wisconsin prosecutor said, "She not only leaves them unattended-but she does so in a way that basically locks them with a deadbolt in a room like animals."
While she was away, a fire ripped through their West Allis home.
Firefighters found the children in a bedroom.
Lonski says, "They're found huddled under a dresser. Two of them are charred beyond all recognition. The third is charred except his face."
Belen's defense attorney argued her client was trying to provide for her family by going to work.
Renya Morales, defense attorney said, "She just made a decision to be able to earn some money to provide for her children. She's the only person taking care of them."
Belen had court orders not to leave her children alone before.
