More Room Needed At Courhouse

Future of Cass county courhouse space part of study. A space allocation discussion led to more cogitation about long-term county office needs.

Some current Cass County Board of Commissioner members think that a plan for a county office annex away from downtown Plattsmouth could be something the public is ready to accept by 2016.

That is a target year because that’s when the jail/law enforcement center bonds are paid off.

The Cass County Courthouse has a new roof and is currently undergoing a fire safeguarding and lighting improvement project that has resulted in some remodeling. It was during discussion on those projects and possible office re-arrangement within the courthouse that commissioners began thinking that long-term office strategies should also be part of the equation.

District 5 Commissioner Ron Nolte brought up the topic at this week’s meeting. “We’ve talked about it before… We need to build an annex as soon as possible. We’ve outgrown this building. It’s going to take a bond issue.” Nolte said it is something the county board should be planning for because so much has changed in county government from 50 years ago and especially from 120 years ago when the courthouse was built. “The taxpaying public deserves a better and more efficient customer service location.”
