More Details On Near Drowning

Here’s more on the Friday afternoon incident at Twin River Water Park in Plattsmouth.

The Cassgram obtained a brief summary of the report Plattsmouth city representative Becky Vermuele gave to Nebraska Health and Human Services on Monday:

A lifeguard and a nearby 10-year-old apparently noticed the girl underwater simultaneously. The child was near the 5 foot mark in the pool and had apparently got there from the zero-depth entry point.

The lifeguard dove in and pulled the child out of the water. Another lifeguard assisted with the CPR. A third lifeguard responded with the pool’s lifesaving equipment.

After three rounds of compressions and mouth-to-mouth the child began to vomit, and then lifeguards suctioned fluids out of her mouth. The girl was placed in the “recovery position”—sitting upright—when Plattsmouth EMS arrived and took over care of the child. She was transported to Bellevue Medical Center.

The preliminary review from HHS is that pool personnel did a good job and that regulations were followed, says Vermuele.

The child’s mother was at the pool with another older sibling, says Vermuele, and approached as CPR was being administered to her daughter.

It happened about 1:30 Friday afternoon with 171 patrons there. The pool attracts its most visitors in mid-to-late afternoon.

There were seven lifeguards on duty at the time. The four that did not administer to the child followed procedure and got everyone else out of the water.

The city is not releasing the names of the lifeguards at this time but may do so in a few days after they have had more time to mentally digest what happened. There is a lifeguard in-service session this Thursday and last Friday’s incident will be talked about.

The lifeguards may be in line for special recognition for their efforts, says Vermuele.

9-year-old Emily Richards was among three girls who spotted the girl on the bottom. Emily said, "We thought she was holding her breath but it turned out she wasn't and we had to tell the lifeguard and it was really scary."
