A woman was taken from her family at age 26, the victim of a hit-and-run. Her mother spoke Thursday with Channel 6 News as the anniversary of the accident approaches.

“Our family has not been right since this happened,” said mom Ann Cervantes. “I mean I have been devastated.” She remembers Ashley Rodriguez as her best friend. “She's been a part of my life since I was very young, 17, practically grew up with my daughter."

Ann's world was taken away from her last June when Ashley was run over by a car. “Those images of what happened to her that night come and haunt me every day, wondering what she went through.”

We now know more about what happened that night. A woman driving by spotted Ashley lying on the side of the road. “Can you drive over to her and see if she's okay,” said the 911 operator. “I'm driving over to her now."

The good Samaritan tried to see if there was anything she could do to help Ashley. “Oh my God, I don't know, she is not responding."

Ann can't get over the moment she learned her daughter was gone. "That comes back and traumatizes me every day. When those cops came to my door, it's just something that you can't describe how you feel."

Even though Ashley isn't here anymore she is still able to make her mom laugh. “She was a dark-haired lady and she should have been a blond, that's what everyone says." Ashley's smile and fun personality will continue to live on in her two children.

A memorial still stands near 64th and Q where the accident happened. Ann said she's been out there a few times, even though it’s incredibly emotional for her. She said they have plans to line Q Street with candles on the anniversary of Ashley's death.

Joseph Brosnihan was sentenced this week to 15-20 years in prison for motor vehicle homicide. Brosnihan had four pitchers of beer before getting behind the wheel that night. He'll be eligible for parole after serving seven-and-a-half years.
