A Lincoln woman who would leave the room so she couldn't hear her 2-year-old scream was sentenced Thursday to six months in jail after making a deal with prosecutors and pleading no contest to negligent child abuse.
State workers had found bruises and scratches on Barbara Laver's 2-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son in January. The 23-year-old's live-in boyfriend, 28-year-old Patrick Austin, was later charged with felony child abuse and has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say she tried to protect Austin by lying about what happened to her daughter.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
