Channel 6 News has confirmed that Alan Smaus is now locked up in the Pottawattamie county jail. Also in custody is a woman described as his girlfriend, Laura Harns-Haffner.
According to Pottawattamie County police reports acquired by Channel Six News, Smaus and a woman described as his girlfriend, Laura Harns-Haffner were staying in an apartment in Minden, Iowa. They were captured just after 9pm Saturday.
When Pottawattamie County Deputy Eric Hempel knocked on the apartment door, Harns-Haffner answered. Hempel asked her if Smaus was inside. Harns-Haffner said no and she started to close the door.
Hempel told the woman the apartment building was surrounded by officers. Harns-Haffner then told the officer Smaus was inside asleep in a bedroom.
Smaus was arrested without incident and booked at the Pottawattamie County jail as a fugitive from justice. Harns-Haffner was also booked as an accessory after the fact.
The two were taken from the Pottawattamie County jail just after 1pm Monday and returned to Douglas County.
Smaus served two stints in prison for violently assaulting the same woman. He had beaten her with a crowbar and threatened to kill the woman and her children.
