Around noon, Open Door Mission volunteers are already prepping for dinner. Cris Morris is with the mission and says their kitchen turns out 2,300 meals a day.
"A dollar-ninety-two goes a long way at our mission and that's equivalent to one meal. So that's pretty reasonable, don't you think?"
What may not be as reasonable is coming up with $100,000 before the end of the year. "We are over budget by $100,000. So we have not yet made our budget."
Joanne Bemis is with the Salvation Army and says they are in the same boat. Their Tree Lighting Campaign is short by about $800,000.
"Always on Christmas Eve, by 2 in the afternoon, we discontinue our bell ringing. So that's why this time of year and this week is so important. It is simply because it gives people the opportunity to still support the Salvation Army and make a different type of investment in helping the needy in our community."
These charities continue to serve more and more people, which may be why they need help more than ever.
