The Omaha Public School Board has approved a contract to use metal detectors at some basketball games. The detectors will be used at random and they will not be announced ahead of time.
OPS spokesperson Luanne Nelson says Omaha Police suggested using metal detectors after several incidents. In those incidents, crowds that were turned away because of overcapacity caused trouble outside basketball venues.
The metal detectors could be put to use as early as this week. Nine school board members were present at Monday night’s meeting. The vote on the contract was unanimous.
