Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert has applied for a permit to carry a concealed handgun. She's quoted in a news release as saying, "It's not an issue of being afraid. It's an issue of not being afraid to protect myself."
The mayor has reportedly passed the required handgun training and safety course required to obtain the permit. She said she wanted to understand what is taught in the class and lead by example. "As mayor, it's important I learn what they teach in this class," she said.
Mayor Stothert bought a Glock 26, 9mm pistol for her training and says, "I'm a pretty good shot, very accurate."
According to the release from the mayor's office, Stothert has not received any threats since taking office in June and she will not carry a weapon at city hall.
Mayor Stothert expects to receive her permit in a few weeks.
