Mayor Arrested in Bar Fight

The mayor of Independence, Iowa, is facing charges of public intoxication and interfering with the police investigation of a bar fight.

Mayor Carl Scharff tells the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier that he wants to tell his version of Friday's events, but he won't until his lawyer approves.

Prosecutors say Scharff argued with police officers who were investigating the fight, and Scharff is accused of refusing to cooperate with officers.

Scharff says he doesn't think the arrest will affect his ability to serve as mayor.

City Councilman Bob Hill says he thinks it's too soon to judge Scharff's conduct because the legal process is just beginning.
