State environmental officials say a manure spill in a small creek near Peterson, Iowa was traced to a hog lot operation.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources was notified of the spill on Monday. Officials traced the manure to a 4,000-head operation owned by Bruce Click of Peterson. According to the agency, Click says he pumped liquid manure from pits under the buildings to a nearby field after a water line broke, flooding the pits. Click says he didn't realize the manure was running off the field.
The DNR says field tests showed elevated ammonia levels in the unnamed creek, which flows for about 2 miles before entering the
Little Sioux River.
Officials are checking to see if the manure killed fish and other aquatic life.
