Authorities say a 32-year-old man who had just been convicted of kidnapping tried to kill himself by climbing over a railing on the top floor of the Linn County Courthouse in Cedar Rapids.

The Gazette reports that the leg shackles on Jabari Walker had been removed for the reading of the verdict Tuesday afternoon. But Walker was still handcuffed as deputies took him from the courtroom.

Officials say Walker jerked away from deputies and almost made it over the railing before he was pulled back.

He remains on suicide watch at the county jail.

Walker was convicted of third-degree kidnapping and faces a 10-year sentence. Prosecutors say Walker drove a 42-year-old woman against her will to an abandoned farmhouse in May and forced her into sexual acts.
