Shelby County deputies were in for a surprise when they arrested 42-year-old Alan Heath Sunday night. When he was booked for misdemeanor theft, deputies discovered an incendiary device on him. The device was removed and placed on the driveway outside the jail.
Harlan police and fire department were called to assist the evacuation of a one block area around the jail. The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office was also called to the scene. A search of Heath’s home revealed a second incendiary device in a backpack.
Both devices were examined and destroyed outside city limits.
Heath was charged with 5th degree theft, interference with official acts, offensive weapon (Class D felony), and two counts of possessing an explosive or incendiary device.
He is being held in the Shelby County Jail with a bond set at $5,000.
