Neighbors called 911 after a frightening display in the middle of the night. Why was a man tangled in power lines?
He’s a 23-year-old Omaha man who wrapped power lines around his head once he couldn’t get into an apartment. It happened just early Tuesday morning near 48th and Ames Avenue.
Neighbor Raelet Wood saw him as he was beginning to climb the side of an apartment building. "I didn't think nothing of it -- I told him he looked like Spiderman. We laughed and I went about my business."
A photo taken by another neighbor showed power lines wrapped around his neck. It looked like he was trying to hurt himself -- and perhaps others -- in a very public place.
"I was told he did some drugs,” said Jeff Hild. “He went crazy on the woman upstairs and she kicked him out. He kept trying to get back in -- and it was like he was 3-times as strong as he usually is."
Neighbors say he was tapping on the 2nd floor windows at first.
When Omaha police officers arrived, they tried to coax him down. It was a precarious position since no one wanted to touch him for fear of getting shocked.
Once officers convinced him to ditch the wires, they got him down without any problems -- and took him to Immanuel Hospital for a medical and mental evaluation.
"It's amazing how stuff like that happens in the area,” said Hild.
Channel 6 News contacted OPPD who says the man could have easily been shocked or electrocuted. It’s why experts always remind us to treat every wire as a live wire.
