Making The Best Of A Tough Situation

Welcome to Nancy and Curt Boyd's front porch.

The Boyds have been living at Waubonsie State Park just northwest of Hamburg, Iowa since June 6th.

They like the outdoors, but...

"When you're confined to a small space for an unknown amount of time it gets old in a hurry," Nancy said.

The Boyds moved here when their farm near Percival was flooded.

"We were fortunate in the fact that we could afford to do some things," Curt Boyd said. "It wasn't what we wanted to do right away but we bought the trailer to live in.

They Boyds are living in the camper with their daughter, her boyfriend and their two grandchildren.

"Now you've just got to make the best of it deal with what you got to deal with and wait for the water to go down and see what we've got to do and get started," Curt said.

Nancy said there's one more thing.

"Try and keep a sense of humor."

The Boyds aren't alone.

Nearly a dozen other families are staying here after being displaced by flooding.

Jean Sidwell is staying in Nebraska City, but her business is east of the river.

"I need to get on this side of the river," she said.

She doesn't own a camper yet but may try to buy a used one.

"I've taken it pretty much in stride," she said. "But I'm ready to get after it though. I want to get back in and start working on things."

It has been difficult trying to lead a somewhat normal life here.

And the things most of us take for granted are missing.

Campers had to install a washer and dryer. The park didn't have one.

Keeping everyone's spirits up is important.

"You've got to do that for the kids because that's really going to affect them the most," Nancy Boyd said.

No one knows how long this campsite will be home.

But no one wants to be here when the weather starts to turn.

"Hopefully we'll be able to get back into the house by then," Curt Boyd said. "If not we'll figure out what next."

One way the Boyds are getting somewhat back to normal, one of their grandchildren registered for school Wednesday.

She will be going to a Sidney, Iowa grade school and was given the option of getting a ride to school or having a bus pick her up.

The bus will make a stop at Waubonsie State Park until the family can get back in their home.
