A man killed in a crash involving a propane truck and train, just south of Union, has been identified as 51-year-old John P. Bruns of Elmwood.
Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, a Union Pacific Railroad train was traveling from Texas to Central City, Nebraska when a truck, loaded with propane, crossed onto the track. It happened about a half mile west of Highway 75.
Bruns was driving the truck. He was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Union Pacific officials say no railroad employees were hurt.
The Otoe County Sheriff's Department notified the Haz Mat Unit after propane was spotted leaking from the truck. The team was able to clean up the leaking fuel, before a fire could start.
Union Pacific said the crossing has non-active warning devices and yield signs. Officials said the track is the mainline that runs between Omaha and Kansas City via Nebraska City and Falls City; roughly ten trains a day operate over the line.
