Omaha City Council President Pete Festersen said Wednesday in a news release that MECA board member Jamie Gutierrez-Mora will resign after questions were raised about her eligibility to serve.
Council members and Gutierrez-Mora determined that due to recent confusion over eligibility rules regarding her residency outside of Omaha city limits and a failure to agree on a resolution, it was best for her to step down.
Gutierrez-Mora and Mayor Stothert had planned to meet about the issue this week, but the mayor said Gutierrez-Mora canceled that meeting via text message.
The City Council will work with the mayor and MECA to address ambiguities in terminology to avoid future eligibility questions. The council will now appoint a replacement for Gutierrez-Mora, but hopes she'll consider serving on the board again in the future if she meets the updated requirements once they are established.
