Lynchings Odd Remembrance

Perhaps the darkest day in the Douglas County Courthouse now has a visual reminder of that time.

Arrows point out the chipped marble on the 4th floor of the building. The damage is from shotgun blasts during the lynching of Will Brown in September of 1919.

The incident led to a race riot and several months of an uneasy peace in Omaha.

The same crowd that lynched Brown also strung up Omaha's mayor but a group of police officers rescued him.
