Local Couple Married 79 Years

A local couple is hitting a milestone.

Alvin and Eula Blankenship were married on June 12th, 1934.

Now, they're celebrating their 79th anniversary.

Both are 99-years-old now.

Eula remembers when they met in Woodbine in the early 1930s.

“Oh yeah, I danced with him, and we got to get going together, and we finally got married,” she says.

At his age, Alvin admits he doesn't remember everything, but he still remembers vividly the day they walked down the aisle.

“Well we got married in the afternoon. It was kind of hot that day," he says.

Through the years, they had a daughter, and grew together at the family farm.

With hard work, they provided for themselves.

“Oh she helped me pick corn, and some stuff like that," Alvin says.

Eula says all of that may have allowed them to live so long.

00:25:54 “Well you know what you do on a farm. You work, in and out," she says.

As they reflect upon their anniversary, they're not quite sure what to think.

“It's just another day I guess. I figure we're pretty lucky," says Alvin.

To last so long together though, they do have some advice.

“We give and take. We had spats once in a while, but you get over them," says Eula.

The way these two move, once could guess they'll be around next year too.

The Amelia House in Council Bluffs, where the couple lives, is throwing a party for them Wednesday night.

It's promising Alvin and Eula an evening with cake and friends.
