Lincoln residents installing a new gas furnace may soon be required to choose one of the most-efficient and most-expensive models on the market.

The Lincoln City Council is considering a rule that would put the city almost a year ahead of federal rules that take effect in May 2013. The new city rule would require all gas furnaces installed after June 1, 2012, to be at least 90 percent efficient.

Current rules require furnaces to be 80 percent efficient.

Gene Krauel is the owner of Clean Gene's Heating and Cooling. He
told the council that the more-efficient furnaces will cost
thousands more to install in apartments and cost more to maintain.

The new rule won't be voted on before Dec. 12.
