A Lincoln man will receive a prestigious award for quick thinking during a dangerous situation.

Brandon Wernhoff went into a Lincoln Walgreens last May to buy a drink.

But when he saw a man in a mask enter the store and head to the pharmacy, he took action.

Surveillance video shows Wernhoff tackling the robber, who was armed with a gun and a knife.

Wernhoff was able to pin the man until police arrived.

His intervention saved the pharmacist from what could have been a deadly situation.

His heroic actions have earned him the Citizen Service Above Self award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

Wernhoff doesn't know who nominated him, but he and two others were chosen from among more than 150 nominees.

Wernhoff is flying to Washington, DC next week.

There he will receive a medal and embossed certificate as part of National Medal of Honor Day.

Wernhoff says he's very honored by the recognition.
