Lincoln's mayor and its City Council have agreed to share duties in planning for and accepting publicly displayed art pieces.

Members of the City Council have carved out a role for themselves in a new ordinance aimed at avoiding public controversy over public art.

Previously, the mayor's office planned to draft the city's public art master plan, with the council able only to reject or approve the overall plan. Now, the council will be able to amend the public art master plan. Also, the council will be able to appeal and revoke - with the approval of four council members - the licensing of a specific piece of art for one of three reasons: health, safety or the welfare of residents.
