Legislature OKs Health and Human Services Budget

A nearly $1.9 billion health and human services budget bill has been approved by the Legislature and sent to Gov. Terry Branstad without a provision to reopen the Iowa Juvenile Home, effectively ending Democrats' attempts this session to reopen the facility closed by Branstad in January.

House and Senate Democrats attempted to amend the budget to reinstate programming at the facility, but lawmakers Tuesday approved a budget bill without the juvenile home language.

Sen. Steve Sodders, a State Center Democrat, says he hesitated to vote yes on the bill for that reason. He says he's "disappointed and disgusted" that nothing has been done for delinquent girls in the state since the home's closure.

Before its doors closed, the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo housed some of Iowa's most troubled girls.
