New Testing Considered For Elderly Drivers

A legislative hearing will be held Tuesday on a bill that would affect about 60,000 Nebraskans. Sen. John Harms of Scottsbluff has proposed new tests be imposed on drivers over 80 years of age as a way to promote safety.

Many like the idea of requiring a cognitive test. Janet Roberts, who is 70, says she'd even support testing for drivers her age. Paul Swanson says he's nearly 80 and is sure of his driving abilities. Swanson says older drivers are usually more careful than many young drivers.

Jennifer Haas thinks it would be a good idea because medication the elderly take could have side effects that affect judgment.
