Lawmakers: Action Unlikely On Abortion, Gay Rights

Iowa lawmakers say they don't expect the volatile issues of abortion and gay rights to dominate the Legislature this year as they did last session.

Republican lawmakers say they still believe the Legislature should further restrict abortions and refer a proposed repeal of Iowa's same-sex marriage law to voters. But since action on both matters is doubtful, legislators say they plan to focus on other matters in the session that begins Monday.

Last session, the House and Senate couldn't agree on different plans to limit late-term abortions. Senate Democrats also blocked Republican efforts to refer a gay marriage ban to voters.

Legislators of both parties say they expect to focus on job creation efforts.
