Lawmakers Discuss Measure To Reduce School Board Size

A bill that would reduce the size of the Omaha Public School Board was heard at the committee level Thursday in the Nebraska Legislature.

Lawmakers are being asked to reduce the size of the board from 12 members to nine. Legislative Bill 125 would also move the election of board members to coincide with city elections, including this year's mayoral primary in April and the general election in May.

There are allegations the school board violated state law by "swearing in" several board members after the deadline.

Among the bill's supporters testifying was State Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, who had this to say when asked if the proposal was put to a vote of the people in Omaha, they would approve it.

"I don't care what the voters would choose to do and let me explain why I say that. These are not popularity contests, we have a responsibility as a Legislature to undertake our duty because I venture to say if you put a vote to the people if they ought to pay any taxes, the answer would be no."
