It's been an extensive effort for rescue crews from Omaha, Papillion and Bellevue, searching for an Iowa man reported missing Sunday at a Sarpy County lake.
That search has come to an end after authorities recovered the body of 34-year old Michael Hartsook of Council Bluffs Tuesday evening,
This was the end to a somber start to the 4th of July holiday for Dan Ryan and his family, as they watched and waited while rescue crews searched Hanson Lake in Sarpy County.
“I hate to see anybody get hurt in the lake,” Ryan said.
Just after 7:30pm crews found the body of 34-year old Michael Hartsook in the lake he had jumped into Sunday morning.
“This is one of the most unbelievable methods that they used today. They scoured over 12,000 square feet of the floor of that lake,” said Sarpy County Sheriff Lieutenant Russ Zeeb.
The volunteer search crew planned to stay as long as it took. They found Hartsook just a few feet from where he jumped in. “It’s a good thing. The family has been waiting over two days and as tough as it is for me to tell them it’s also a sigh of relief to know their loved one is going home,” Zeeb said.
The family now has some closure after a long wait, but also a long road ahead. “It’s tough, a young mother with two small children, I think they are two and five. It's going to be a tough road for her raising her kids without a daddy. And a mother that lost her son. Very close family,” Zeeb said.
An autopsy has been scheduled and the lake will be open Wednesday for the 4th of July.
