A new emergency notification system will soon be operational in La Vista, but before it can be used in an actual crisis situation it needs to be tested, which the city will do at 7 p.m. Thursday.

System provider Nixle obtained landline telephone numbers and integrated those into the city’s system as a basis for making emergency notifications by phone. Those landline numbers, as well as those registered in the past on the city’s website, will be used in the test.

Those receiving the test call will also be given more information about how to register additional phone numbers and email addresses, which can be done by visiting the city’s website, or by texting La Vista’s zip code, 68128, to the number 888777.

The notification system will be used to send different types of emergency messages to subscribers by phone, text and/or e-mail, depending on the situation.

Alerts - Messages pertaining to urgent matters involving health, life, safety and property dangers. These messages will be sent via all channels possible, including phone, text and email.

Advisories - Messages sent to residents in a geographic area regarding topics such as water main breaks, major road closures and missing children. These messages will also utilize all channels possible, but only for residents in the affected area.

Community - Messages regarding city-sponsored events that will impact a specific area with a large population. These messages will be send via email only.

Once registered, residents may visit and log in to their account and change their settings.
