Job Fairs Help With Teens' Job Search

The Maple Street YMCA in Omaha held a teen job fair and workshop today. The event helped teens like Britany Regnerus fill out some job applications in hopes of landing a job for the summer.

"It's actually exciting because you get to meet new people and see different things, and see what you could do and see what you like," said Regnerus.

But time may be running out for young job seekers.

Jill Schoenherr is the Senior Program Director at the YMCA. "Many places, when we called them, had already hired for their summer positions, so they weren't coming today. So a lot of them had already hired."

By noon Wednesday at least 400 job seekers of all ages had already paid a visit to the community job fair at the Goodwill Industries Headquarters at 72nd and Ames.

Tim Suelter, who is an employment specialist with Goodwill says teens may have to look harder to find a job.

"Entry level jobs may not be as easy as they were in the past," says Suelter. "But today there are opportunities out there. Today we have McDonald's. We have Arby's. We have employers who are ready for those entry level positions for the high school jobs and the right out of high school jobs."

Coshenia Hall is 19 years old and has been looking for a job since last year.

"A job itself is looking for a job," Hall said. "You have to want it. You have to be able to call. You have to be able to check up on yourself. Update your information (with prospective employers). That's what I'm doing right now is updating my information."
