The Nebraska Unicameral is officially nonpartisan. Even so, Republicans outnumber Democrats two-to-one. Our Decision 2012 coverage continues with a look at the race in south Omaha and something that hasn't happened this election season until now.

Democrat Jeremy Nordquist wants four more years as state senator representing District 7. “We have a lot of challenges, challenges with education and jobs in south Omaha. For me, it's about making the community stronger and moving us forward.”

His Republican challenger is Christopher Geary. The former Marine opened up a martial arts school as a black belt after leaving the military. Channel 6 News wanted to hear why he's running for state senator and his vision for south Omaha, but in a rare move for a political candidate asked to share their views about being elected, Geary declined to be interviewed.

Nordquist knows his way around the Unicameral where there are no official party lines. Prior to being elected, he spent four years working for the previous state senator. “You talk with legislators in other states and they're shocked we get to introduce our own legislation and we're not told which legislation needs to be introduced."

Even though he's outnumbered when labels are attached to the senators, if elected he's going to carry the torch for issues important to him. “On the tax side is a bill I'm going to continue to push, an exemption for Social Security benefits. We're one of only five states in the country that tax Social Security benefits to the full extent of the law and because of that we have the third-worst tax climate in the country for retirees."

Perhaps this is an indicator why Geary didn't want to talk. Nordquist says Geary offered to drop out of the election months ago if the senator would cover the costs he had already invested in the campaign. Nordquist declined.
