Iowa Woman Gets New House Built

Out of tragedy, a blessing for one Iowa family.

It's been a tough year for Sandy Umphreys of tiny Thurman, Iowa.

Thurman is 33 miles south of Council Bluffs and was rocked by a tornado last April.

Umphreys lost her home in the storm.

But she is finally seeing some good come from the disaster.

Just after the storm hit, Sandy surveyed what once was her home. She lived here since 1985.

"You couldn't see anything out of the window at all," she said. "My house was gone. It was it was devastating."

Today, Sandy's despair is excitement as a new home rises from the old.

Twenty-four workers are building a new home for Sandy and her disabled daughter.

They're a ministry called 'One Family, One Home, One Purpose.'

"When they first told me about it, I cried like a baby because I couldn't believe anybody would do that for me," Sandy said. "It is such a blessing that all of these people have came here to put a house up for me for me and my daughter. It's hard for me to express."

Ryan Johnson is director and co-founder of the group.

"We started a non-profit specifically for this purpose to serve those in need who have been affected by natural disasters," he said. "We feel that God led us to Thurman and we're thrilled to be here we feel that our ministry is really focused toward small communities and families that may think that they've been forgotten."

Most of these workers are skilled craftsmen. They do quality work quickly.

Roofing materials are going up two days after the foundation is finished.

And they're all volunteers.

"They just want to serve the Umphreys family and they're excited about it," Johnson said.

Many came from as far away as Illinois to fulfill their mission.

"This kind of work is important to us," Johnson said.

As Sandy gives us a sneak peek at her new home, there's more good news.

The house will be done by December 22nd.

"So we're going to have Christmas here," Sandy said.

This is the second home One Family, One Home, One Purpose has built.

The first was in Joplin, Missouri after another tornado struck there.
