Iowa Voter Registration Controversy

Democratic Attorney General Tom Miller says his office will defend Republican Secretary of State Matt Schultz against allegations that he overstepped his power in enacting rules to remove foreign nationals from the voter registration database.

Miller told reporters Friday his office is actively defending the lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the League of United Latin American Citizens.

The lawsuit claims that Schultz improperly adopted rules laying out a process to remove non-citizens who are improperly registered to vote. Schultz's office is looking into 1,000 such cases.

Miller says he's working with Schultz to shape a process where people who are ineligible do not vote but others "are not deterred or suppressed in any way." He says the two are trying to handle the issue responsibly.
