Iowa Could Eliminate Straight Party Voting Option

Iowa lawmakers are considering legislation that would eliminate the option of voting a straight party ticket.

The measure, sponsored by Republican Rep. Peter Cownie of West Des Moines, is up for review in a state House committee Thursday. If passed, it would mean that when Iowans go to vote, they could no longer check one box and select all the candidates from a single party. Instead, they would have to individually vote for each candidate on the ballot.

So far lawmakers have been split over the plan. The bill passed a Republican-majority subcommittee in January, with the Democrat on the panel opposing the change.
