Iowa Community Gives OK to Casino Gambling

Voters in the county that includes Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are overwhelmingly in favor of allowing casino gambling.

The Gazette reported Tuesday night that voters in Linn County -- in the eastern part of Iowa -- approved a referendum on casino gambling by a 22-percentage point margin, 61 percent to 39 percent.

A group of investors plans to build an $85 million casino across the Cedar River from downtown Cedar Rapids. Voter approval, however important, is just the first step. Now the investors must work to secure license from the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission, the newspaper said.

The vote is a turnaround from 10 years ago, when Linn County voters rejected casino gambling by nearly 6 percentage points.
