There already is a 5 percent tax on landlines. One estimate presented to the council says modifying the tax language to include cell phones could raise up to $480,000 a year.
The North Platte Telegraph is reporting that Mayor Marc Kaschke would veto such a change. The mayor says he thinks property tax relief should be a result of spending cuts. Councilman Jim Carman says some residents might argue that a cellcphone tax would be unfair to large families with several cellphones.
The council is expected to continue discussion on the communication tax at its work session in July.
