Propane Tanks Explode At Construction Site

A huge plume of smoke and flames shoots up from a house at 195th and Shadow Ridge Drive. Pictures taken by Channel 6 viewer John Kendall show just how intense the fire was.

For Lyle Ried who lives right behind the house, he saw the intensity first hand. “It was about a five foot diameter ball of fire that shot out and about 10 feet from the house.” Several windows on Ried’s home were cracked because of the explosion.

So what would cause a fireball like that? We’re told the house was under construction and there were workers inside when a propane tank exploded.

Michael Alcaraz was working next door, when the other crews warned him. “Literally after we got out there the house just went up, it went fast,” said Alcaraz.

Firefighters were called to the scene and two more propane tanks exploded. Miraculously no one was hurt, but it was quite a scene. The fire and smoke could be seen for miles.

Jennie Meyer heard and saw it from blocks away. “I looked up and there was another explosion and fireball and thick black smoke.” Even her friends were talking about it. “It was huge my neighbor up on 204th and Pacific also saw the smoke.”

The house is a total loss. The house next door received minor damage. Now investigators hope to find out exactly what caused the first tank to explode.
